The Junior Sail Program (JSP)

The EYC Junior Sailing Program is a non-profit Corporation operating within the Etobicoke Yacht Club. It's activities are made possible through dedicated club members who volunteer hundreds of hours to ensure the success of the program. In addition to offering affordable tuition fees, other financial support is provided through Corporate, Government and private donations.

EYC's Junior Sailing Program (JSP) is looking forward to another exciting year of introducing and continuing the positive experiences for youth through our junior sailing programs. This year we will again be providing Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) certified courses.

Again for 2013 ! EYC's Junior Saling program has five used Opti sailing dingy's for use during the Opti Race program. These boats will enable some students to participate in the Opti Race Team without the need to purchase their own boat. A $300.00 rental fee plus a $400.00 refundable damage deposit is charged when this option is selected during the registration process. These boats are alocated on a first come first served basis.

The Canadian Yachting Association's CANSail Program

In 2012, the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) introduced the CANSail program to the Sail Training community. Since the EYC Junior Sail Program is required to comply with this national sanctioning body, the CANSail program has replaced the traditional White, Bronze and Silver/Gold programs. This program is more focused on the competitive aspects of sailing, in addition to the learn-to-sail curriculum. Also, students will now have the flexibility to  advance up levels in any type of boat, either single or double handedly crewed.

The CANSail program contains six (CANSail 1 - 6) segments each containing a progressive list of skills in a check-list based format. Students are advanced up in levels as the skills are learned and demonstrated. While the levels are an indication of progression, in practice many students will be working on skills across multiple levels at any given time.

Each student will have access to an online "electronic logbook" with their individual skill progression documented and available at anytime for personal review. This web based system will enable instructors and students to track and report individual achievement in a common simple format.

Learn to Sail This Summer!

The EYC Junior Sailing Program has been established to promote the sport of sailing for the young people of our community.

Junior sailors will take advantage of the finest water park in the region. The Program is conducted in a dedicated on-site training facility located within the Etobicoke Yacht Club and on the water in the beautiful sheltered Humber Bay.

EYC's clubhouse grounds are fully fenced for security and safety. The attractive Dry Sail Club provides boys and girls' washrooms, lockers, change rooms. The beach dinghy launch area is large enough to accommodate all of our boats with safety and protection.

There is easy access to the lake under the supervision of instructors in powered launches. In the event of inclement weather, the inside bay course is available for our use.

Our Junior Sailing Mandate…

Courses Offered for youth aged 7 to 17

There are several options available when selecting the sail program that would suit the individual level of experience and timetable of the student. The Canadian Yachting Association's Learn to Sail standards provide safe, standardized instruction for recreation and competition in sailing dinghies.

 Wet Feet, CANSail 1 & 2
are the introductory levels. Beginners are introduced to and taught the basic skills of sailing. The focus is on safety, seamanship and boat handling. Basic skills are taught using Oppi sailing dinghies and advance skills taught using the recently aquired state-of-the art RS Feva high performance sailboats.

CANSail 3-6
This program is where sailors are introduced to advanced sailing techniques, including sail trim, boat tuning, boat maintenance, trapezing and the use of the spinnaker. CANSail 3-6 levels are taught using Club 420's.

Opti Race Program

Ask any Olympic sailor what boat he/she first raced and chances are it was an Opti. The Opti Race program is for those CanSail 1 or 2 graduates who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in handling an Opti Sailing dingy and want to enter the world of competitive organized class level racing. This Course focuses on race tactics and skills by instruction plus actual participation in sanctioned sailing regattas. Requisite CANSail skills are also awarded during this program.

 EYC Performance Race Team

(Formerly Gold/Silver Levels)
This course targets sailors interested in further developing their racing skills and tactics as well as providing a more in depth understanding of sailing theory. Students train on their own Laser, Radial or Byte sailing dingys. This is the highest level of the 'learn to sail' program.

All training provided by CYA certified instructors. Low Student to Instructor ratio ensures students individual attention. Requisite CANSail skills are also awarded during this program.
